Deuxième conférence d’un cycle organisé en partenariat entre la Faculté d’Architecture de l’ULg et la Société libre d’Émulation avec pour thématique Architecture & Culture.
Pour cette conférence (ATTENTION : CONFERENCE EN ANGLAIS), nous recevons Willem Jan Neutelings du bureau Neutelings Riedijk Architecten.
Depuis plus de 25 ans, Neutelings Riedijk Architecten s'est spécialisé dans l'architecture de bâtiments publics culturels. Ce bureau, basé à Rotterdam depuis 1987, est, notamment, l'auteur du "MAS", le Musée de la Ville d'Anvers, bâtiment nominé au Prix Mies van der Rohe et récompensé par de nombreux autres prix internationaux. Actuellement, il termine le projet du "Spuiforum" à La Haye, un des plus grands centres de théâtre, de danse et de musique des Pays-Bas et la “Eemhuis”, une bibliothèque et centre culturel à Amersfoort.
Voici comment le bureau qualifie son travail : “Les projets de notre bureau peuvent être compris comme une volonté de donner forme à la vie publique. Ils expriment une tentative de création d’identité que ce soit pour un lieu, une institution ou même une communauté d’usagers, de voisins ou les concitoyens d’une ville. La monumentalité et l’ornement sont les moyens idéaux avec lesquels on peut représenter la signification d'un bâtiment. La conception générale, l’iconographie et la matérialité deviennent des outils dans la construction d’une identité locale." (Michiel Riedijk, El Croquis 159, 2012, p 219)

Second conference of a series organized in partnership between the Faculty of Architecture of Liège University and the association Société libre d'Émulation with Architecture and Culture as topic.
For this second conference (IN ENGLISH), we welcome the architect Willem Jan Neutelings from the office Neutelings Riedijk Architecten.
Since more than 25 years, Neutelings Riedijk Architecten has specialized in the architecture of public cultural buildings.
This office, based in Rotterdam since 1987, is the author of the “Mas”, Antwerp’s City Museum, building nominated for the Mies van der Rohe award and the winner of many other international prizes. It is currently finishing the “Spuiforum” in The Hague, one of the Netherlands’s biggest centers for theatre, music and dance, and the “Eemhuis”, a public library and cultural center in Amersfoort.
Here is how the office describes its work: “Our office designs can be understood in terms of a desire to shape public life. They constitute an attempt to create identity - for a place, an institution or even a community of users, neighbours or city dwellers. Monumentality and ornament are the ideal means by which to represent the significance of a building. The overall design, iconography and materiality are instruments in the construction of a local identity." (Michiel Riedijk, El Croquis 159, 2012, p 219)
